Cruz Roja Begins its Annual Campaign for Funds
By Daniel Nordby
I am a US paramedic rider with Cruz Roja de San Miguel de Allende, Gto. For the past two weeks, I have had the unique opportunity to be a paramedic team member with ambulance crews of Cruz Roja de Mexicana San Miguel as we responded to emergency calls, stabilized patients in the field, and rushed them to a higher level of care.
As Cruz Roja begins its annual campaign for funds, I urge you to give generously. My special plea for support goes to the extranjero community. Increasingly, calls for immediate help come from English-speaking patients.
Hopefully, the opportunity will attract more of my US colleagues in the future. What I have discovered, however, comes as no surprise. On my first shift, our team responded to a patient with abdominal bleeding, a woman who was having a stroke, an older patient who was in complete respiratory arrest after suffering a heart attack, and, after dark, a vehicular accident with injury. I witnessed a level of professionalism, training, and effectiveness on the part of the ambulance crew that should make this community very proud. Cruz Roja de San Miguel responded to more than 5,600 calls last year and transported more than 5,000 patients, touching the lives and health of 15,000 families.
More than 95 per cent of all services were offered without cost to patients. Upgrades to equipment are needed. Your donation can help cover trauma shears (US$12) or pulse oximeters (US$1,200) or badly-needed 12-lead heart monitors (US$11,000) or an advanced life support ambulance (used) for US$35,000. Training to keep crews at their highest level of preparedness is also important. Training to bring young students into the program to replenish staff is vital. If you have the resources, please dig deep to help meet these needs.
I hope Cruz Roja does not need to be called to your door. But if one of our ambulances and EMS teams is needed, please know that you will be in good hands. Your generous support will ensure that care. Of course, your donation will have a deductible receipt.
