A Vacation Day

By Sandra Ríos

Since this is Holy Week and many people are on vacation, we propose a relaxing day in San Miguel de Allende. First, have  breakfast at Cafe de la Parroquia, a place that has a great tradition in the city and a beautiful garden. While you decide what you want for breakfast, they’ll bring you a basket of bread with homemade jam. We recommend you try huevos rancheros, accompanied by orange juice and coffee to fill you up and get you ready for  wherever you go.

After your breakfast, we suggest exercise: go biking on one of the largest dams in central Mexico. You’ll drive along old abandoned trails through a tunnel 500 meters long and then go along the Rio Laja through a canyon full of Mexican flora. After a few miles, you’ll come to the community of La Huerta, where there is a spectacular tree, “El Sabino.” From there you will be directed to the community of Alonso Yáñez to appreciate beautiful scenery and then head back to the dam.

On your return to the city, you’ll be ready for a good dinner at one of the best restaurants in San Miguel, the restaurant Mi Casa. Located inside the Instituto Allende building, it has an excellent view of the Parroquia. We recommend that you try chiles rellenos or enchiladas del portal. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, there is live music at 7:30 pm.
