More Music at Teatro Ángela Peralta

By Salomón Maawad

On Friday, March 20, and Saturday, March 21, there will be two jazz concerts in the Teatro Ángela Peralta. The first concert will feature The Etnic Jazz Era Group which fuses contemporary jazz with percussion rhythms from different parts of the world, played on tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones and acoustic and electric bass, in various formats. Most of the music is a selection of my original compositions and arrangements taken from my CD productions and adapted for this project, as well as two compositions by Charlie Parker. The group is composed of Victor Monterubio, percussion; Adrián Flores, acoustic and electric bass; and me on tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones.

The second concert will be with a jazz quintet. During a musical career of more than 35 years as saxo player and composer, I have been influenced by the rhythms, melodies, and harmonies of the legends of jazz.  Although classic jazz was my stepping stones, I have developed a style of my own, blending melodies and rhythms from all over the musical map (bebop, Latin, North African, funk and modern jazz) and utilizing the offbeat time signatures characteristic of avant-garde jazz, I have come up with a varied and eclectic sound that is highly original, musically complex, and pleasing to the ear.

I have been organizing these national jazz encounters since 2003 to bring together a group of jazz loving musicians to explore, develop, and present original projects, and most of all, to jam together, enjoy, and have fun.
