On Thursday, February 26, Club de Golf Malanquín showed off its prestige and beauty when it hosted its Second Interzone Women’s Tournament. The Association of Mexican Women Golfers (AMFG) requests each club in the Central Zone to host a monthly “Torneo de Convivencia.” The women of Malanquín stepped up to the plate by being the first club of 2015 to host its tournament. This first tournament of the year attracted over 140 women golfers from over 18 golf clubs from the Central Zone of Mexico. The states represented by these women golfers were Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí.

Last year, Malanquín was able to host its First Women’s Interzone Tournament when it showed off its newly opened expansion 18 hole golf course. That tournament was also a resounding success, which attracted over 130 women golfers from the Central region. Malanquín is known for its beauty and the golf course is extremely challenging. The women golfers, who ranged from Categories one through five, concluded that the course was beautiful, challenging, and a lot of fun.

After the tournament, the ladies enjoyed a spectacular and beautifully decorated luncheon at the clubhouse. We still cannot believe the number of women golfers who were so excited about playing Malanquín once again! We had originally set a cut-off number of golfers to 120 women. Three weeks before the tournament, we had already reached that number. Even so, we ended up accepting a total of 140 women golfers, and we still had to turn away a few because we just didn’t have more room!

Honors from Malanquín went to Ginny Green, first place gross in Category two; Julie Allbritton, first place gross in Category three, and Barbara Flynn, first place net in Category three. Cindy Kessler, another Malanquín golfer, won “closest to the pin on Hole 11.” There was also a Hole-In-One on our famous island green, Number 17, which was made by Yolanda Rentería de Galazia of Pulgas Pandas.

All in all the tournament was a huge success and the major reason for it was because of the numerous sponsors and donors and volunteers who graciously gave their money, gave beautiful prizes for raffles, and spent tireless hours to ensure its success. Bachoco brought their grills and set up their kitchen outside, offering delicious Buffalo wings as well as carnitas and all kinds of wonderful botanas, which the lady golfers gobbled up with joy. Additional other sponsors displayed their beautiful wares. Malanquín women golfers thank them wholeheartedly!
