Strong at the Broken Places…
By Gregory R. Gunter
Hemingway’s quote from A Farewell to Arms proved prophetic and ended the 10th Annual San Miguel Writers’ Conference with the walking⎯and imbibing⎯ghost of Papa encouraging those writers with countless rejection slips to remain strong at the broken places and keep trying. And when thriller novelist Scott Turow echoed author Michael Lewis’ sentiment that luck looms large in the publishing equation, the audience of writers kept their dice handy: that 7-come-11 roll can occur at any age! Highlight of the conference? A stolen kiss from feminist Gloria Steinem and a seraphic smile from The Girl with the Pearl Earring, Tracy Chevalier. Come Conference number 11, we’ll be stronger yet!
