Rosewood Expands Sponsorship of Concurso San Miguel
By Shari Alexander
Opera San Miguel (OSM) announced this week that Rosewood San Miguel de Allende will increase and expand its long-standing support of the company’s flagship project, Concurso San Miguel, its celebrated contest for young Mexican singers. Frequently named the number one hotel in Mexico, Rosewood has repeatedly demonstrated its support of important community outreach projects, perhaps most notably its pioneering sponsorship of OSM’s Master Teacher Program. Created by artistic director John Bills in 2012, the Master Teacher Program offers Concurso finalists the opportunity to work closely with international opera stars of the highest rank.

“For the fourth consecutive year, the Rosewood Master Teacher Program is able to offer our finalists master classes, aria preparation, and career counseling conducted by singers with deep experience on the great opera stages of the world,” says Bills. “This program is just one of the ways that Concurso San Miguel has set a new standard for opera contests, not just in Mexico, but world-wide. We are immensely grateful to Rosewood and its general manager, Alfredo Rentería, for their continuing and expanding commitment to this unique and vital program.” In addition to the Master Teacher Program, Rosewood endows the Concurso’s annual “Audience Favorite Prize.”
Made possible through Rosewood’s commitment, OSM has named celebrated American soprano Maureen O’Flynn the Rosewood Master Teacher for 2015. O’Flynn will conduct two full days of master classes with this year’s finalists. In addition, French-Canadian heldentenor Alain Nonat will conduct master classes in French operatic repertoire leading up to this year’s contest finals on March 7. Then on March 11, one of the most acclaimed singers in the world, Mexican tenor Javier Camarena, will conduct a public master class with the winners of Concurso San Miguel 2015. Mr. Camarena will be flying in from performances in Vienna especially for this master class. “Opera San Miguel is pleased to recognize Rosewood and Mr. Renteria for their genuine and sincere engagement with the cultural life of San Miguel de Allende,” Bills said.
