Concurso San Miguel Returns March 7!
By Shari Alexander
Overheard at Rosewood last week: “Last year’s Concurso was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life!” Variously described as “American Idol for Mexican opera singers,” “the Must See Event of the Season” has an atmosphere more akin to a World Cup championship than a staid operatic event. Concurso San Miguel returns for the seventh year on Saturday, March 7, 7:30pm, at Teatro Ángela Peralta.

Nationally Celebrated Contest for Young Mexican Opera Singers

Widely seen as the most exciting and significant musical event of the year, it will indeed be a thrilling experience when 10 of the most talented young opera singers in Mexico compete for more than 200,000 pesos in career grants and performing opportunities. “Each year we have had a stronger and stronger field of applicants for our contest” says Opera San Miguel’s Artistic Director, John Bills, “and this year is no exception.” The singers selected for the Final Round are the crême de la crême of Mexico’s young opera singers and the company promises an edge-of-your-seat night.
Concurso San Miguel is the flagship event of Opera San Miguel, whose principal mission is to discover and assist in the careers of the most talented and promising young opera singers in Mexico. All the prize money awarded is raised privately in San Miguel de Allende, primarily through the generosity of individual donors, the Angels of Opera San Miguel. After a preliminary round of auditions, 10 finalists are invited to participate in a week of musical, dramatic, and language coaching, master classes, aria preparation, and career development counseling, all conducted by a distinguished group of opera luminaries who donate their time and experience at no cost to the singers. Finalists are housed and fed for the week by the Angels.
Singers frequently describe their experience in San Miguel as life changing. The week culminates in a thrilling Final Round before a wildly cheering audience. This year’s judging panel is made up of experts from the US, Canada, Mexico, and the Netherlands, a truly international jury. “I am so gratified to have such an experienced group of judges this year, because the final decisions are going to be incredibly difficult” says Mr. Bills. Tickets for this perennially sold-out event are on sale now at the Peralta box office. Make this one of the most thrilling experiences of your life!
