The Study of Dental Beauty in its Natural Form and Function
By Edgar Ricardo Olivares
In recent years México has become part of the bioesthetic dentistry specialized approach to healthier dental systems. But what is bioesthetic dentistry? According to its founder Robert L. Lee, D.D.S., who graduated from Loma Linda School of Dentistry in 1959 and also holds a B.A. in Biology and an M.S. in Bacteriology and Public Health, “Bioesthetics is the study or theory of the beauty of living things in their natural forms and functions.” It covers three important elements: mandibular articulations with its muscles and joints; anterior teeth form; and posterior teeth form. When these elements work in harmony, it is considered a stable chewing system, but when any of these elements fails to perform correctly it starts a destructive process which will result in worn, chipped, cracked, or broken teeth and loss of facial esthetic. Dentists who specialize in this field warn about some of the signs and symptoms associated with a disharmony of the chewing system, including worn teeth, joint pain, facial pain, migraine headaches, failing restorations; chipped, cracked or broken teeth; chronic head and neck pain; upper muscular pain and tension.
Dr. Benson, former president and director of education of the Optimal Biology International (OBI) Foundation for Bioesthetic Dentistry, has taught bioesthetic dentistry throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, and South America since 1994. He says, “Bioesthetic dentistry is a process that accepts optimal biologic form as the basis for comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning. Optimal biologic form is the term that dentists trained in the principles and techniques of bioesthetics use to describe healthy, beautiful, unworn, and highly functional mastication systems. Through the study and observation of superb unworn dentitions that have survived in prime condition for decades, we have been able to define the attributes of optimal biologic form. Contrary to most breakthroughs, which have been technical, this subject demands attention to “discovery” over “invention.” Although an ideal biologic system goal is rare in the health arts, bioesthetic dentistry has one. As the discovery process evolves, the qualities of optimal health biology continue to be clarified.”
There are only five bioesthetic dentists in México who have accomplished level four in OBI Foundation at the United States and are certified by ABD Academy of Bioesthetic Dentistry; Celaya is the closest city to San Miguel de Allende where you can find a specialist. The benefits of bioesthetic dentistry treatment go all the way from preventive attention to the most extensive organic rehabilitation. It is good at any age and under any condition. A younger looking facial aspect can also be achieved along with healthier smiles since the first treatment. The goal is to help you and your family to have a lasting function and beauty of the chewing system.
Esthetic or cosmetic dentistry only repairs what is wrong, as mere decorative treatment. Function is not important and it will not heal the problem. Bioesthetic dentistry offers the best of both worlds: function and beauty.
Bioesthetic dentistry covers three important elements:
1. Mandibular articulation, with its muscles and joints
2. Anterior teeth form
3. Posterior teeth form
