Marie Goudy and Johnny Favourite Cover Ella and Louis, Louis and Keely
By Juan Benjamín Puebla Sotelo
When someone says “jazz trumpet,” the first name that comes to mind will almost always be the legendary Louis Armstrong. His iconic bright sound and good-natured, gravelly voice paved the way for the path that jazz would take for the whole 20th century. He was even the first jazz musician to play trumpet in an era when everyone else was playing the much more mellow cornet, and he is often credited as the inventor of vocal “scat” improvisation. When Louis paired up with Ella Fitzgerald, it was a match made in heaven; the sweet melodious voice of the “First Lady of Song” alongside Louis’s growls make for music that is almost impossible to listen to without a smile on your face.

There is of course another Louis who made a significant mark on the 20th century jazz scene: the great Louis Prima. He started from the same roots as Armstrong, playing trumpet and singing in a New Orleans jazz band, but while Armstrong stayed constant with the jazz standards, Prima moved with the times and embraced boogie woogie and rock and roll. Louis Prima’s band was known for their wild antics; even while recording they would parade around the studio. Prima met seventeen-year-old Keely Smith in 1948, and she became his sidekick vocalist and later on his wife. The two of them recorded many timeless classics, such as “Just a Gigolo” and “Jump, Jive and Wail.”
In this special tribute to these four fantastic musicians, the role of Louis Armstrong will be split between Canadian team Johnny Favourite and Marie Goudy. With Johnny handling the vocals of Louis and Louis, Marie will play the part of Louis’ trumpet and Ella and Keely’s voices. Backed by some of the best jazz musicians in the San Miguel/Queretaro area, this band will give a performance to remember!
