San Miguel-based actor Jim Newell is about to breathe life into the character of the world’s most famous detective with his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, starting this coming Wednesday, February 25, and running for one week only. Newell heads up a seasoned cast directed by Allan Gross in the dazzling Steven Dietz play Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure at Teatro Ángela Peralta, with five performances through the weekend.

Newell says the acting bug first bit him as a senior in prep school in southern California. Newell then pursued acting further, honing the craft and sharpening his skills by earning a Ph.D. in Theater at Wayne State University in Michigan. Thus, according to Newell, it’s been a 38-year love affair with the craft. The nine-year resident and his wife Judy are familiar faces and voices in the San Miguel theater scene and are often seen in plays with the San Miguel Playreaders at St. Paul’s. Wishing to showcase and elevate local theater, Newell is further acting as point man and founder of the recently conceived San Miguel Playhouse, located on Av. Independencia, where Newell serves as president and managing director of the new San Miguel Theater Company. Jim’s enthusiasm is infectious when he speaks about the new 125-seat three-quarter thrust stage venue, which he calls a very intimate space.
Newell’s leading man’s voice portrays the erudite Sherlock Holmes, brilliant and cocksure. Holmes wields an enormous amount of overt and stealthy weaponry in the strength of his mind. Newell recalls many memorable depictions of Holmes, including the mastery of Basil Rathbone, and appreciates other interpretations like The Seven Percent Solution, with actor Robert Duvall playing Holmes’ sidekick and often narrator, Dr. Watson. Newell adds that acclaimed local actor Bill Pearlman expertly fills the Watson role in The Final Adventure.
This play was penned for the stage by award-winning American playwright Steven Dietz in the 1990s. Newell claims Dietz’s language and pace is “Shakespeare-like.” Then with a twinkle of his eye says, “Well, maybe not as good as Shakespeare, but it’s close, very close.”
Newell can’t say enough about his association with The Bajio Rep Company here in San Miguel. “The direction, the talented and diverse cast, the production’s attention to detail, the scenery, staging, along with a dedicated crew and vigorous publicity will all make for a memorable production.”
Supporting the Holmes character, besides Bill Pearlman’s Dr. Watson, is the seasoned Ethan Emery playing the diabolical Professor Moriarty, Holmes’ most formidable sworn enemy. In The Final Adventure, he wishes to take Holmes down once and for all. David Galitzky, Anne Campbell, and Geoff Hargreaves are Moriarty’s evil partners in crime. Clara Dunham plays Irene Adler, a character equally as brilliant as Holmes, and the only woman who has ever pulled on the super sleuth’s heartstrings. Howard Platt appears as the King of Bohemia, and Gregory Diamant and Caden Koontz round out the cast.
