Exploring Quality Essential Oils
What Makes the Difference?
By Lita Batho
You may have heard the buzz about essential oils or seen your friends using them for all sorts of things like coughs, allergies, sunburn, headaches, insomnia, digestion, immune support, arthritis, and more. It seems like there’s an oil for whatever ails you. Is this a new trend or fad? Simply put, no. Essential oils have been used for centuries to support health and healing. Although modern extraction methods have made it possible to distill purer and cleaner essential oils, this medicine has been around for quite a long time and can provide simple, effective solutions for many physical and emotional health issues.

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants that are extracted by steam distillation or cold press processes that vary from simple to very refined. They can be beautifully fragrant as well as provide protection against predators, injury, and disease. The oils are non-water based and fat soluble, but do not include the fatty lipids found in vegetable oils so they don’t feel oily. They feel clean to the touch and are absorbed almost immediately into the skin. For thousands of years essential oils have been used for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. As modern science inclines more and more towards a holistic approach to medicine, essential oils provide a pure, plant-based option that puts us back in touch with the healing power of nature that is often much more absorbable than allopathic drugs.
I’ve been working in the wellness industry for over 20 years and am intrigued and inspired by the positive benefits that I’ve seen my family, myself, and others receive from essential oils. With a little information to set them on the path, many feel instant benefit and value from these gifts of the earth. I’ve found ways to support mood, reduce anxiety, promote good sleep, prevent colds and flu (and mitigate those unpleasant symptoms when they do happen), as well as ease the pain of headaches, muscle aches, allergies, and sprains. It’s been a process of simplifying my home medicine cabinet, since each oil has multiple possible uses, is easy to travel with, and works so well.
My class at Moonrise is intended to inspire people to learn about essential oils and try many of our samples. The class will address what essential oils are, which oil to use for what, and how to choose good quality oils that can be used with confidence. Be empowered to take your health maintenance into your own hands.
