Volunteer at the SPA – A Win-Win Proposition!
By Megan Gabel
Did you make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight? Have I got a deal for you! Don’t join a gym. Save those monthly fees. Get in shape, build that muscle tone, increase your stamina, with the added benefits of multiple dog kisses of affection and gratitude, all for free. Come and walk dogs at the SPA! No fee, no contract, no hidden language, just the joy of being outside, getting to know loving animals, and building up a sweat. How great is that?
Looking for less vigorous participation, but the same amount of warm, fuzzy, good feelings? Get to know our cats, kittens, and puppies. Volunteering for cats and kittens entails sitting with them, dangling toys to entice them, and holding them on your lap as you stroke silky fur in exchange for many purrs of contentment. You can romp with puppies in Puppy World. They are always eager for attention and love to cuddle.
Not only will you enjoy yourself, but you will help our approximately 100 resident cats and dogs. The more people animals get to meet, the better it is for them. They learn to become socialized and how to feel comfortable with strangers, important as a precursor to a happy adoption.
Just look at Mark, a Canadian visitor who has spent many hours on his vacation with the cats; he’s obviously enjoying playing with Georgie. Pat has fallen in love with Tessie, a Golden Retriever mix, and has made great strides with her, patiently helping her become less afraid of going for a walk on the street. Snapping her fingers to get Güera to look in the camera, Ann has been a regular volunteer during her extended visit to San Miguel. Melissa, Rosie, Sarah, Maria, Alex, and Elena, all with broad smiles on their faces, have their arms full of adorable puppies. Like these wonderful volunteers, you too can discover that volunteering for the SPA is an amazingly delightful and rewarding way to spend your time.
Volunteer hours are Monday-Saturday, 11-2pm at Los Pinos 7, 152 6124. Spend as much time as you want during those hours; we and our animals will appreciate it. Volunteer information sheets are on the website in Spanish and English here: http://www.spasanmiguel.org/how-you-can-help/volunteer/
You might want to pick up a SPA t-shirt or cap when you come in, for you or for a unique present for any animal-loving friends. We have multiple colors and a design specifically geared for cat lovers and another for dog lovers. See pictures on this page of our website: http://www.spasanmiguel.org/how-you-can-help/support-fundraising/
We look forward to meeting you at the SPA!
