Sedate to Wild and Crazy Baroque Architecture Tours

By Betse Davies

On two Thursdays this month, our two architecture tour guides will be leading their informative tours, meeting in the Jardin across the street from the Parroquia. The tour lasts about two-and-a-half hours of mostly level walking.

There are five distinctive styles of architecture to see. One of the most interesting ones is Baroque. You will see early examples of the way this style was used and then the flamboyant type it developed into—which led the Spanish colonial government to mandate Mexican Severe, the classic look. You will see other styles as well, including recent Mexican Modern from Mexico City. Most of the downtown area was frozen in time by law in 1926 in an effort to preserve its colonial heritage. Your entire 200 peso donation for the tour goes to Patronato Pro Ninos, the organization that has provided medical and dental care to the needy children of San Miguel and the 450 villages and ranchos which surround the city for over 40 years. Your donations help keep it going!
