Opera San Miguel Announces 2015 International Panel

By Shari Alexander

Fresh on the heels of the company’s hugely successful “Mexico-Canada Co-OPERA-tive Concert,” Opera San Miguel has announced its panel of judges for “Concurso San Miguel 2015,” its celebrated contest for young Mexican opera singers. Emphasizing OSM’s growing international reputation, this year’s panel will include judges representing Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands, and the United States.

“We may be a national contest,” says Artistic Director John Bills, “but this year we will have a truly international jury.”

In addition, Bills has chosen Maureen O’Flynn to be the Rosewood San Miguel Master Teacher for 2015. Bills inaugurated the Master Teacher Program when he became Artistic Director in 2011, through the generous sponsorship of Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, to bring world-renowned singers/teachers to work with the finalists during Concurso week. “There is a special magic that happens,” Bills says, “when an eager young singer works one-on-one with a seasoned professional with deep experience on the great operatic stages of the world. The experience can be anything from eye opening to life changing! In past contests our singers have worked with international opera stars Paul Plishka and Michael Sylvester. We are delighted to add Ms. O’Flynn to that eminent list.”

Opera San Miguel had reason to celebrate last month, when the first singer to be discovered through its Concurso debuted in a principal role at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, mezzo-soprano Cassandra Zoe Velasco. Who will be the next future star from Mexico to be discovered by Opera San Miguel? Attend the Concurso and see for yourself!

Joining Maestro Bills in determining this year’s winners will be:
From Mexico:
Charles Oppenheim, Editor, Pro Ópera magazine, Mexico City
From Canada:
