Tribute to Jack Heimowitz
By Robin Loving Rowland
Friend to many, neighbor to some, beloved volunteer Jack Heimowitz passed away recently after a brief illness. Many have sent tributes to this good man who worked tirelessly for Jóvenes Adelante from his well-warmed perch at the Biblioteca where he met with university scholarship students whom he mentored, sponsored, and taught English.
“Jack was a total delight: erudite, funny and a dedicated and generous teacher even after he retired, although I guess he never really retired. I will miss him.”
Susi Beere
“Jack was a loyal supporter of Jóvenes Adelante from the early years of the organization. He sponsored students, providing financial support for their university careers; he helped students learn English so they would have better job opportunities; and he was a faithful, loyal mentor to students. We will miss him.”
Sue Leonard
“I’d see Jack every Saturday at the library. He taught and coached so many people, I didn’t know which ones were his assigned mentees and/or sponsees. He flirted with all the girls and often jokingly accused me of stealing his girlfriends. I’ll miss him.”
Jock Whitehouse
