Fringe Is Coming to Town!
By Kathleen B. Lowenstein
Our annual program of co-productions and original productions supports the work of recognized talents in Mexican theater. These professional productions will be conceived, partially funded, and promoted by FSM and will also have a life beyond the festival on a national and international tour.
El año de Ricardo
Co-production with La Fábrica (Querétaro), written by Ángelica Liddell, adapted and directed by Alonso Barrera, starring María Aura and Juan Velázquez Blanco. The production premiered in San Miguel de Allende on October 24 and 25, 2014 in the Teatro Santa Ana and then went on to a season in the Foro de la Fábrica (Querétaro) in November 2014. The tour continues in Mexico City at the end of January, 2015 and the production will then return to San Miguel for two performances during Fringe 2015. We are currently looking into the possibility of an international tour to the United States in 2015.
Desde el callejón
Co-production with Erando González; written by Erando González; starring Erando González, Citlalli Muñoz and Montserrat Verdugo; directed by Erando González. Fringe San Miguel is collaborating with playwright/actor Erando González to produce this new staging of a play written in 1999, with a new cast and creative team. This dazzling musical comedy follows the well-worn path of the celebrated The Beggar’s Opera (John Gay, 1728) and picks up inspiration from Bertolt Brecht, José Caballero, and Raymond Chandler along the way.
This new production has a cast of three actors and five musicians who reinterpret the iconic songs with a Latin rhythm and flavor. In this play that is as hilarious as it is thought provoking, the characters find themselves not in the underworld of 19th century London, but instead in modern day Tepito, Mexico City. The premiere of the production will be part of Fringe San Miguel 2015.
