Behind the Scenes

From the SPA

By Joan DiPiero

A visit to the SPA main cat room can overstimulate the senses. Cats here, cats there, some just waiting for you to sit so they can claim your lap, others gazing at you hoping that you will admire their good looks, and others running around, chasing balls and each other, totally oblivious to your presence. While most of our cats are social and confident, others aren’t as comfortable with other cats or humans. Unfortunately, as a result, most adopters pass them by and some of our loveliest cats get overlooked.

You can find Jacaranda resting in a cubbyhole piled high with blankets, doing her best “Princess and the Pea” impersonation, almost camouflaged by her surroundings. A nine-month-old kitten, she is white with apricot makings and sweet blue eyes. Since she was a baby, she’s had the same timid, gentle personality. While her siblings were lively, she was always content to sit on the sidelines, watching their high-energy play. We don’t know why she’s shy, but when removed from her hiding place, she enjoys being petted.

Iggy can usually be found in the top of the cat condo, comforting and reassuring a newcomer. Who knew that our most maternal cat would be a male? This one-year-old black boy has white markings on his tummy and a white-tipped tail, so we can easily identify him when he’s in his dark cubby with several admirers crowding his space. He’s just as great with people, an affectionate guy who is only hard to find when fulfilling his duties as “new kitten mentor.”

Alexa is in her very own private suite, far away from the other cats. A beautiful chocolate point Himalayan, she was found wandering in a field, emaciated and full of burrs and pickers. She is now recovering, her fur growing back and some weight gain. Normally we’d have adopters ready to claim a cat this special, however, Alexa is at least 10 years old. A dignified old lady, she refuses to put up with other cats, so needs to be an only child. She is a guaranteed lap cat, purring and wanting attention. Do you have a generous heart to give this lovely girl a home? You will be rewarded by Alexa’s sweet disposition and loving ways.

Meet Jacaranda, Iggy, and Alexa at the SPA, Los Pinos 7, 152 6124, Monday-Saturday, between 11 and 2. We’ll help you find them when you stop by!
