The San Miguel Playhouse
By Judy Newell
After three smash hits and much deliberation, The San Miguel Theater Company is pleased to announce the official naming of its theater space as The San Miguel Playhouse. Located at Av. Independencia 82, the 125-seat professional-quality theater opened to rave reviews with Moonlight and Magnolias in October of 2014.
One reviewer wrote: “I was expecting to be disappointed, having seen previous local musical productions that had left me wanting. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement; it was a great evening and I loved the show. Brisk pacing and deceptively simple staging was just right for this night of (basically) musical comedy. I laughed a lot harder than I’d expected, that’s for sure.” – Doug
Doug Robinson blew the roof off with his jazz concert “Plays Well with Others” in early January. Six outstanding musicians and an incredible singer performed all-star jazz to a sold-out house.
Upcoming events include Going On, a one-woman show by accomplished Canadian actress Elizabeth Richardson on February 6 and 7. Drawing from her own life, Elizabeth counterpoints her struggles as a young actress on a 1970′s theater tour with Peter O’Toole with her later challenges as a Buddhist on a three-year meditation retreat in Nova Scotia. “Richardson transfixes her audience by doing multiple, convincing and entertaining voices of her characters.” – The Chronicle Herald A graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA), Elizabeth has performed in major theater, film, and television productions in England and Canada. She has worked with acclaimed international actors and directors and played leading parts in London’s West End, the Bristol Old Vic, the Neptune Theatre in Halifax, the Shaw Festival in Ontario, and Canadian Stage in Toronto.
On February 21 and 22, The Playhouse will be the performance venue for the second annual Fringe Festival, with 21 shows from six countries represented. The performances at The Playhouse will be announced at a later date.
“Opening night for the new theater and the play was amazing. The venue is wonderful and the actors did a marvelous performance. People need to pour out and pack the house each night…this had me standing and applauding at the end.” – Dick
“Felicidades! You and your colleagues have created a warm and inviting space for theater in SMA.” – Gregory
The Playhouse has offered two musical events to date, both of which surprised and delighted San Miguel audiences. “Broadway Babes” a musical review of 20 Broadway songs performed by a six-woman cast in December was lauded in the Civil List as “magnificent!” by Cherirae and “Fantastic!” by Darlene.
“Best concert we’ve been to in San Miguel!!! Blew our socks off and danced in our seats. Bravo to Doug and his rockin’ group of outstanding musicians!” – Denise
“Wow, Wow, Wow, is all I can say about last night’s show. We all were blown away by the talent you brought together. Iraida is out of this world, literally from another planet. I’ve never heard a voice like that, haunting, passionate, perfect pitch, the real deal. Thanks so much for bringing such great music to San Miguel.” – Carol
