Last April, New York City went wild over Camarena’s last minute substitution in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, prompting the first encore of an aria at the Metropolitan Opera in over 30 years. Camarena’s appearance here caps the company’s 2015 season, which begins on February 1 with the First Annual Mexico-Canada Cooperative Concert, with Opera San Miguel tenor Fabián Lara and up-and-coming Canadian star, soprano Tamara Rusqué. The pair will sing an exciting program of opera arias and duets, operetta, Zarzuela, and some of Mexico’s most beloved songs, including Granada and Júrame. Minister-Counsellor Bez Babakhani will attend, representing the Embassy of Canada in Mexico, to inaugurate this first-ever operatic cultural exchange between Canada and San Miguel de Allende.
Concurso San Miguel, the company’s annual contest for Mexico’s most talented and promising young singers, returns on March 7 for its seventh incarnation. From a small regional contest in 2008, Concurso San Miguel has grown to be one of the most important and respected contests in Mexico, with a growing international reputation, so much so that this year’s contest will feature judges from the US, Mexico, Canada, and Holland. Ten singers will vie for more than 200,000 pesos in career grants.
As part of their prizes, this year’s Concurso winners will also receive an entire day working with Mexico’s most celebrated international opera star, Javier Camarena. The tenor will share his wealth of experience with the winners of Concurso San Miguel 2015: a day session devoted to a frank and open discussion of what it takes to make a career in opera, followed by a public master class. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our audience to see and hear an artist of the highest rank, in his absolute vocal prime,” said John Bills. “We are so grateful to Javi for donating his time and talent to Opera San Miguel and our programs on behalf of young Mexican singers. I know I am thrilled, and our audience will be ecstatic!”
