Gloria Steinem

The 2015 Big Read presents video clips of several interviews featuring writer, lecturer, and feminist activist Gloria Steinem. The video excerpts were taken from the Makers: Women Who Make America series, Oprah’s Next Chapter, and her now famous interview with actress Jennifer Aniston. Steinem will present the closing keynote address at the San Miguel Writers’ Conference on Sunday, February 15, at 6pm. She will be featured in a workshop: “Gloria Steinem and Suzanne Braun Levine in Conversation,” on Friday, February 13, at 9am.

The videos will be presented on Monday, February 2, at 5pm, at the Teatro Santa Ana. Tickets can be purchased there a week ahead of time. We will schedule another date and post online on the SMA Civil List.

In 1972, Steinem co-founded Ms. magazine and, in 2005, she co-founded the Women’s Media Center with actress Jane Fonda and author Robin Morgan. Today, she travels internationally as an organizer, lecturer, and frequent media spokeswoman on issues of equality. Steinem defines a feminist as “anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men.”

In 2014, Steinem served as Executive Producer on the HBO documentary, “Private Violence,” as an expression of her commitment to bringing domestic violence to the forefront.

Steinem has said that “feminism is about friends and sisters and community.” We created this event to share Steinem’s vision of the feminist movement and its present goals, and to create an informal opportunity for us to come together and discuss the stories we share. If you were alive in the 60′s and 70′s, the words of Gloria Steinem are a part of your personal history. She once said, “The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.” And her words often did both. Join us and share your story of how Gloria’s words touched your life. Or join us and listen to how her words touched the lives of others in our community.

In another program related to the Writers’ Conference, The Big Read will present the movie Girl With a Pearl Earring at the Shelter Theater on Wednesday, February 4, at 7pm. The film is based on a novel by Tracy Chevalier, also a keynote speaker at the Writers’ Conference. The novel was inspired by Delft school painter Johannes Vermeer’s painting. The film presents a fictional account of Vermeer, the model, and the painting. Nominated for three Academy Awards, the film won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Cinematography. Tickets are available at the door.
