Friends! Earthlings! Humans! Who are we, why are we here, and how did we get into the mess we’re in? Is there any hope for us and our species? In this widely acclaimed comic monologue, Nisker explores the foolish human condition and the joys and sorrows of living in the modern age. He reveals the secrets of anti-matter and tantric sex, explores the issues of species extinction and global warming, and exposes the true heart of the New Age movement. By placing today’s headlines in the context of biological evolution and all of human history, Nisker offers us the relief and laughter that only vast perspectives can bring. This is comedy for the rest of us.
Scoop is a Buddhist meditation teacher, author, and performer. His books include the national bestseller, Essential Crazy Wisdom, The Big Bang, The Buddha, The Baby Boom, and Buddha’s Nature, and his most recent book, Crazy Wisdom Saves the World Again! Nisker is also the founder and co-editor of the international Buddhist journal Inquiring Mind. For nearly 40 years he has worked in radio, first as a news anchor and more recently as a commentator. During his career he has won the Billboard Magazine, Columbia School of Journalism, and San Francisco Media Alliance awards for excellence in FM radio programming.
About his middle name, he says, “I got my name Scoop when I was the news director of a ‘counter-culture’ radio station, back in the late 60′s, early 70′s. Everybody was taking on new names and identities at the time. Because I had secret sources on the inside of the alternative culture, I was the first in San Francisco to announce the formation of the Youth International Party, the ‘Yippies,’ and I ‘scooped’ all the other media in San Francisco. One of the DJs gave me the name Scoop, and it stuck.”
He has also studied Buddhist meditation for over three decades with teachers in Asia and America, and, for the past 15 years, has been leading his own retreats and workshops in Buddhist insight meditation and philosophy at venues internationally. For the past year and a half, Nisker has been performing his monologue to critical acclaim in venues around the country.
“His performance, laced with his original songs, manages to make suffering a knee-slapper. He delivers Zen zingers with Borsht Belt timing.”—New York Times
