SMA Democrats Abroad Annual meeting
Mon, Jan 26, 2pm
Democrats Abroad is the official arm of the Democratic Party outside the United States. Chapters are active in countries throughout the world. The Democratic Party treats Democrats Abroad as the “51st state,” and the organization has elected representatives on the Democratic National Committee and at the Democratic National Conventions, giving Americans living outside the United States a voice in the future of the country and its policies.
The San Miguel de Allende chapter of Democrats Abroad was formed in 2004 and chartered by the Democratic Party in 2005. All full-time and part-time residents of San Miguel are invited to join. There are no dues and no mandatory meetings. There is only one-way to join, by going to the website democratsabroad.org, hitting the “join” button and filling in the brief membership form.
The San Miguel chapter is one of the most active in Mexico. Of course the organization supports Democratic candidates, but it also conducts a nonpartisan “Get Out the Vote” effort every two years to assist Americans living in San Miguel to register to vote and request absentee ballots. In addition, the organization conducts a Global Democratic Presidential Primary to allow local Democrats the opportunity to participate in person in the process of choosing a Democratic Presidential Candidate. SMA Democrats Abroad sponsors educational forums and issues-oriented meetings to assist Americans living in San Miguel. It also sponsors social events, such as the SMA Democrats Abroad Fourth of July Party.
Outgoing Democrats Abroad Chair Bruce Rossley said, “After ten years, our founding members look forward to remaining active but turning over the leadership of SMA Democrats Abroad to those who have moved here more recently. We urge all Americans living part-time or full-time in San Miguel to go to our website, democratsabroad.org and join before the January 26 Annual Meeting. Members may choose to join simply to be on our mailing list and be notified of our activities or they may choose to volunteer for our programs and activities or they may decide to serve on our governing board. Just because we live outside the United States does not mean that we cannot have a voice in the future of our country.” Monday, January 26, at 2pm at La Biblioteca in the Sala Quetzal room.
