Born in 1930, Portuondo, also known as “the bride of feeling” or the diva of Buena Vista Social Club, managed to put in her interpretations the feeling of Cuban music along with touches of American jazz, bossa nova, and bolero. She has become internationally known as a representative figure of the Cuban musical movement of the 20th century. She has carried those rhythms and inspired songs to many different stages shared with other stars, such as Nat King Cole, Ruben Gonzales, Eliades Ochoa, Compay Segundo, Manuel Garban, Ibrahim Ferrer, and Edith Piaf.
Cuba now finds itself at a historic moment; there may be dramatic changes coming to politics and daily lives. This may also mark a new course in their artistic expressions; especially in that music that we already appreciate. New possibilities will continue to make us dance and feel the passion of that tropical island. Without a doubt, we can say that Buena Vista Social Club and Omara Portuondo have blessed our generation and many generations to come.
These talented musicians living in San Miguel have come together to perform a repertoire of these rhythms, “son,” and bolero so we can savor listening to songs like “Dos Gardenias,” “Quiza,” “Nosotros,” and others, giving us an unforgettable musical evening remembering Old Havana. We will also have a video specially prepared so that we can enjoy the memorable images of romantic Cuba.
