An Incredible Eco-Tourism trip to Tolantongo
By Jock Ferguson
This autumn, the Center for Global Justice will revisit the wonderful Grutas de Tolantongo ecological resort from Tuesday, February 3, until Friday, February 6.
This ejido cooperative is one of the most successful in Mexico. In Tolantongo, the stunning blue warm water river and the gorgeous green surrounding mountains can attract up to 6,000 visitors on a weekend, many from Mexico City, Queretaro, and Hidalgo. Most camp along the river, while smaller numbers stay in the co-op’s 174 hotel rooms. But since we will visit midweek, we will have this lush resort practically to ourselves. We will be spending three nights in hotel rooms on the upper level of Tolantongo with three meals daily featuring local dishes.
Enjoy the spectacular view of the canyon below as you soak in the warm spring-fed infinity pools. Below you can swim in the thermal river that originates from warm water flowing out of a unique mountain cave. Sit in the cave under a shower of warm water gushing from the top of the cave. For the hikers there is a wonderful trail that takes you down from the upper hotel area, close to the river. And for the more adventurous there is a zip line (Tirolesa) that will whisk you down to the river area. Several good hiking options will give the active participants a highly unique view of the entire area, several special eco-connections, as well as more eating and water pool hang out options.
You will also learn about the history and operations of the cooperative. Its members share the work as well as the benefits from this successful resort. They rotate jobs annually and take obvious pride as worker-owners of this unique resort that their labor has created. The Center for Global Justice is producing a documentary film about this unique cooperative. View our trailer about it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMpYoSPlMtI to see the delights in store for you.
