Exploring San Miguel

By Sandra Ríos

La Azotea

To start the day in a good mood and prepare to explore San Miguel, begin with a breakfast at Café Santa Ana, in a lovely courtyard surrounded by art. Delicious breakfast packages include coffee, fruit or juice, potatoes with rosemary and beans, bread, butter and jam or tortillas and salsa. We suggest huevos rancheros, or for something sweet, order the blueberry pancakes. Reloj 50A, Tel. 152 0293.

After breakfast, visit the archaeological site Cañada de la Virgen. This area was once an important social center linked to the political system of the Toltecs. Its axis of symmetry is directed to the rising and setting of the sun and moon, and its design indicates cosmic cycles governing farming and hunting. 30 km southwest of San Miguel de Allende. Information: Plaza Principal 8, Tel: 152 9600, 10am-6pm (closed Mondays).

On your return, we suggest La Azotea, a place close to the Parroquia with a great view, where you can enjoy a beautiful sunset with a cocktail, delicious jícama tacos, and breaded shrimp for dinner. Listen to excellent music here as well. Umarán 6, Tel. 152 8265.
