A Brief History of Christmas

By Atención staff

Old Christmas card hirez

Did you know that Christmas was once against the law in America? Or that the date we celebrate Christmas was chosen by Bishop Liberius of Rome in 354 CE? The fascinating story of how the Christmas holiday and traditions were established will be told by Jon Sievert at this week’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Service. Everyone has his or her own personal experiences with Christmas, but much of the Christian world observes the holiday with many of the same traditions—the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, Christmas trees, gifts, cards, carols, Santa Claus, special cookies and baked goods, parties, and decorations. He will relate the origins of those traditions and how they came to be ritualized throughout the world. Special music will be provided by guitarists Jack Sievert and Frances.

I was the staff photographer and a writer and editor for Guitar Player, Keyboard, and Frets magazines for more than 20 years, where he photographed or interviewed many of the greatest musicians of our time. In 1996, he formed Humble Press to publish his book, Concert Photography: How to Shoot and Sell Music Business Photographs. With his wife, Wendy, he moved to San Miguel de Allende in 2003, where he continues to write and work on book projects as a designer and publishing consultant.

The UU Fellowship meets every Sunday at 10:30am at La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15, and welcomes everyone. Visitors are invited to attend the service and then join the UUs for hospitality and discussion afterwards. Wheelchair accessible. For additional information, visit www.uufsma.org.
