Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way
By Megan Gabel
San Miguel has a bounty of animal lovers⎯generous, devoted, zealous, and caring. Our hearts go out to homeless street dogs and cats, skinny, unsterilized, hungry, and alone. We ache over animals who are abandoned and left to fend for themselves. We try to help, taking the needy ones to a vet for care, feeding them, giving them water, and often providing a temporary or permanent home for these creatures. What amazes us time and again is how forgiving they are. Life has not been good to them, but they often don’t hesitate to cuddle up for some kindness.
For more than 30 years, the SPA has worked together with the community to provide, as our motto aptly states, “Hope, Health, Homes for Cats and Dogs in Need.” A few years ago, the SPA was close to closing its doors because of the lack of funds. Due to the kindness of animal lovers like you, who thought beyond the present and into the future, the SPA inherited funds that have kept us going. Each month we use some of those savings to cover expenses. We don’t have a comfortable reserve, though.
In 2014, we had many happy-ending adoptions, none of which would have been possible without your financial support. Samantha has a wonderful new life where she goes kayaking with her family. Canela adores her plushy pink bed, playing with toys, and her new owner. Daisy, abandoned, cold, and hungry, has a home with a “brother” and a loving family. Sweethearts Lady and Tramp, both formerly street dogs fending for themselves, were each adopted into fantastic homes where they receive the love and care they deserve. Kitten Carmelo traded in his baby blanket for bedtime with his favorite human. Svelte Molly is pleasingly plump now that she’s settled into her new home. Gonzalo’s and Jasper’s antics are keeping their people in great shape. Bohdi moved to Memphis, thrilled to be closer to Elvis. The end of the year makes us reminisce and plan for the future. Please think about the SPA when working on estate planning and drafting your will. Donations of cash, property, land, and other assets of value can make the difference in allowing the SPA to continue its work in serving the community and our animals in need.
