Christmas Jazz Concert
By Antonio Lozoya
Without music, Christmas would be just another day. Music enlivens Christmas Eve and Christmas day, whether for the Christian faithful or for the secular merrymakers. That’s why we invite you to join us to celebrate together these unforgettable moments.
Christmas Jazz Concert
Sun, Dec 21, 7:30pm
Teatro Santa Ana
This great jazz concert will feature three singers from the United States. Lorenzo Toppano, musician and stage performer, spent the majority of his childhood touring the world with the acclaimed musical group The Toppano Family. By the age of 23 he had performed in vaudeville, revues, nightclubs, theater in the round, television, radio, musicals, pantomimes, and concerts in more than 35 countries, including the opening ceremonies of the Sydney Opera House and two Royal Command Performances.
Joan Yonkler, a part-time resident of San Miguel, has been singing all her life while pursuing a career in advertising. Joan has performed at the famed jazz club Blues Alley and at the Black Fox Lounge in Washington, DC, and performed at the Teatro Santa Ana in early December. And singer J.K.O’Donnell has been a staple of the San Miguel music scene for the last two years, since relocating here. As a founding member of the ZuZu Men—one of San Miguel’s best R&B bands—he plays here as well as in other cities in Mexico and the US.
In the rhythm section, the Canadian guitarist Ken Basman. Ken is certainly one of the most renowned guitarists nationwide. Originally from Toronto, Canada, he began his studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston and continued with private lessons with Gordon Delamont (arranger of Duke Ellington Orchestra and CBC), classical guitar with Eli Kassner (Liona Boyd teacher), and jazz guitar with Hank Morris and Art Devilliers.
On the drums, Sebastian Voegler, raised in Germany and New York, presently a Stockholmer. Sebastian’s empathetic high frequent timing and splendid technique make him one of the most demanded drummers in Sweden. With his smooth pattering and undulating elasticity he is a perfect fit with this group. I am on the bass, I graduated from the School of Music in Mexico City as a Bachelor of Jazz and I had performed in several festivals in Mexico, Cuba, and the US, accompanied by prominent personalities such as Dave Pike, Bob Sheppard, John Ronstadt, Francisco Mela, Paul McCandless, Lila Downs, Magos Herrera, and others. In 2006, with Tere Urtusástegui I reactivated the International Jazz Festival and added the blues; since then I has been in charge of the general direction of the International Jazz and Blues Festival of San Miguel de Allende.
Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy with us your favorite Christmas songs! This Sunday, December 21, Teatro Santa Ana, 7:30pm.
