Our Dogs and Cats Need You!
By Lynn Weisberg
Rosario, an abandoned Himalayan cat, was emaciated when brought to the SPA. Her fur was very matted and full of stickers. She was so close to death from starvation that she was only able to tolerate very small portions of food at a time. She required a special diet, medical attention, and close observation. She is improving daily. We’re so pleased that she will be ready for a new home in a few weeks.
The before picture of Pammi, a miniature poodle, shows her when she was brought to us, covered with so many burrs and stickers that her eyes were unable to open, her ears were stuck to her head, and her tail was stuck to her rump. She was skin and bones and full of lice and fleas. Completely helpless, she could not have survived much longer. After shaving her fur and treating her eye infection, we discovered a joyous little soul, loving and playful and so happy to be able to see her new friends and hear their comforting words. Pammi has already been adopted by a wonderful family.
These are just two examples of what we face every day. Thanks to our hardworking volunteers and staff, we have countless happy endings. For more than 30 years the Sociedad Protectora de Animales de San Miguel de Allende, A.C. has been committed to maintaining a refuge for animals who can’t ask for help themselves. Thanks to our supporters who contribute via donations, membership dues, casita sponsorships, supporting our fundraisers, and bequests, our non-profit no-kill shelter is able to house approximately 100 animals and has over 200 adoptions per year to loving homes. We also operate a low-cost veterinary clinic and provide education and community service opportunities to children in our area.
The annual cost of caring for all of our animals and our clients’ beloved pets exceeds 2,000,000 pesos. Despite taking many cost-saving measures, monthly operating expenses always surpass our income. Without donations, we would not be able to keep our doors open. We need your help! Please consider donating as much as you can to the SPA. Donate online via PayPal here: http://www.spasanmiguel.org/how-you-can-help/support-fundraising/. Peso checks (to “Sociedad Protectora de Animales”) or US$ checks to “Actinver Casa de Bolsa S.A. de C.V.” or “San Miguel Community Foundation” (for a US tax receipt) may be left at the SPA or any La Conexion location (marked “SPA, PMB 18”). Thank you!
