Danzón: There Goes Another Year!
By Leonardo Rosen
First, I want to thank Atención and the people of San Miguel de Allende for their enthusiastic support of “El Danzón y Otros Ritmos Bailables con el Club de Danzón Mercerina” for nearly six and a half years. It is an honor to present this free admission dance event in the Jardín Principal of our city. All of the people can and do participate, including those of very limited resources.
El Danzón y Otros Ritmos Bailables con el Club de Danzón Mercerina
Dec 7 and 14, 5-8pm
El Jardín Principal
On November 15, the Club de Danzón “Mercerina” represented San Miguel with honor at the Muestra Nacional del Danzón de Querétaro 2014. With the famous orchestra, the Danzonera Joven de México del ‘Chamaco’ Aguilar, we presented a fairytale choreography to the danzón, “El Violín Encantado” (“The Enchanted Violin”). I want to thank for their distinguished performances Claudia, Rosío, Omar, Vicki, Martín, Maty, Bulmaro, and our beautiful children, Sofy and Yaír. The Club “Mercerina” is the official representative of the City of San Miguel de Allende to the danzón. We repeated this choreography along with exhibitions of improvised danzón at the closing event of the Feria de la Lana y el Latón in the Plaza Cívica on November 23. Yes, we do keep busy!
This has been a year of successes on a national level and even internationally at the University of Texas in Austin. It has also been a year of battles to keep our events alive. We will close out the year with two events in the Jardín Principal. The first will be held Sunday, December 7. The second is our pre-Christmas show on Sunday, December 14. Both have the same hours, 5 to 8pm. We hope to have the Orquesta Marimba “Tono 13” on December 14. Please check by calling 152 6385 (Educación y Cultura) or 154 5840 (Leonardo Rosen). Let us dance in praise of Love, Peace, and Happiness. ¡Feliz navidad y próspero año nuevo!
