Broadway Babes: A Musical Review

By Jim Newell

Broadway Babes, the incredible virtuosity and talent of the six-woman cast

Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone, a comedy tonight! The new San Miguel Theater Company will open its doors with its second production, Broadway Babes, a musical review of 20 funny, moving, familiar, and occasionally peculiar songs straight from Broadway. Ranging from operatic to showbiz flash, the songs cover the gamut of human experience. They will make you laugh often, weep occasionally, and wonder in astonishment at the incredible virtuosity and talent of the six-woman cast, all of whom will be familiar to audiences from their prior forays onto the San Miguel stage. Babes features singers Phoebe Greyson, Clara Dunham, Gerri Baruch, Judy Marzulli, Kate Rowland (musical director), and Peggy Powell (choreographer.) Mauro Ledesma provides piano accompaniment. Jim Newell directs.

The inspiration for Babes came from producer Phoebe Greyson’s love of musical theater and her conviction that other actors in San Miguel would share that love. Equally inspiring was the creation and completion of the new San Miguel Theater. Greyson, a founding member of the SMTC, entranced by the theater’s thrust stage and acoustics, resolved to make her vision of musical theater in San Miguel a reality. Within a month of putting out the call, she had a cast of six and dozens of possible songs. She also managed to engage the incredibly talented Mauro Ledesma as pianist for the group. The dream had become a reality and Broadway Babes was born. While originally Greyson had chosen twenty songs she wanted to do, her cast had its own definite ideas. Greyson modified her original concept, but resolved that Babes would be only the first of a series of semi-annual musical reviews produced by the company. “The songs will change, the cast may vary from time to time, but this is only the first review of many. There is so much talent here and the layout and acoustics of the new theatre are so perfect, how could we not make it a permanent part of our season?”

The show will most likely sell out. It is a five-day run and everyone loves music! The theater, at Avenida Independencia 82, has comfortable reserved stadium seating, great sight lines, a lounge area with beverage service, free parking, security, and a taxi concierge who will insure that a taxi is waiting for you after the show. This is an experience not to be missed. Broadway Babes opens Wednesday, December 10 and runs through Sunday, December 14. Curtain is at 7:30pm, except for Sunday, when the show starts at 5pm. Tickets are 150 pesos (donation) and can be obtained in advance at La Tienda of La Biblioteca, or at the theater on the night of the performance. Doors open an hour before showtime.
