Written by the late Dutch priest-poet Jacques Schreurs, writer of many successful and beautiful poems and theater pieces, the play is a rich, artistic interpretation of the last days of Jesus’ life, his friends, family, followers, villagers, and their leaders under the oppressive reality of Roman occupation. The story is a thoughtful character study and exploration of inner conflict, human frailty, and redemption.
Passion Plays have their roots in European culture and can be traced back for centuries. The plays were primarily used to teach and evoke the time period in which Jesus lived. Traditionally they are performed by the citizens of the towns in which they take place.
The 500 actors and extras of the Dutch Passion Play are all citizens of the village of Tegelen. Their passionate and undeniable acting talent comes from the heart, years of commitment to their appointed roles, and a deeply held, sincere belief in the message conveyed by the Passion Play.
Proceeds from the screenings will benefit La Biblioteca’s children’s programs. Tickets available at the theater (10:30am-7pm, Mon-Fri) or at the door.
