Stray from the Beaten Path
By Irene Diamant
Good news! While many people have been in therapy for years or are part of a 12-step program, dogs need only three steps: patience, love, and training. Forget years of psychoanalysis; our happy stories of adjustment average from days to a few short months at most. Believe in change and open your heart to these canine souls who started life on the hard side of the streets, such as Macy and Tessie, overlooked because they are shy and wary of strangers.
As a two-month-old puppy, Macy was being kicked and abused by a bunch of kids. Enter our heroine who scooped her up and saved her, her brother, and two puppy friends, all of whom had been abandoned at a school in Atotonilco. Understandably, Macy is shy on first meeting, wary on the second one, and, by the third, is most likely nestled in your lap! Slender and pretty, she also plays well with other dogs, teasing them adorably as she runs like the wind, enticing them to join her. She’s been at the SPA for two years, waiting for someone to have the patience to get to know her, fall in love with her, and take her home.
Can a photo do Tessie justice? The Golden Retriever in her mixes harmoniously with some other silky breed, thus creating the illusion of an autumn day in Vermont. Tessie is wary of walks. Her puppyhood must have been terrifying as she was found abandoned on a road. A Good Samaritan picked her up and fostered her until she was seven months old and we had room for her at the SPA. Things have greatly changed in the one and a half years since she came to us. She will now enjoy a walk with volunteers she trusts. She loves romping in our dog run area and taking a quick dip in the big water container. She soaks up being petted and receiving affection.
Patience and love will go a long way with Macy and Tessie. Training will also help. You can learn a lot by reading and watching videos, not just about teaching a dog tricks, but helping one to overcome shyness and insecurities. The SPA will be happy to recommend a trainer who can help as well.
Visit the SPA, Los Pinos 7, 152 6124, 11am-2pm, Monday-Saturday and give Tessie and Macy a chance for more than a first impression.
