For the first time in several years San Miguel PEN is presenting an event especially accessible to the Spanish-speaking audience of San Miguel.

An Afternoon of
Poetry and Dance
Presented by PEN
Sat, Nov 29, 6pm
Bellas Artes (Centro Cultural El Nigromante)
Free entrance

The event, “An Afternoon of Poetry and Dance,” will take place in the auditorium of Bellas Artes on Saturday November 29 at 6pm. PEN International, the largest worldwide association of writers, is dedicated to freedom of expression around the world.

The afternoon will start with the beautiful and talented Justine Hernández from San Juan del Río, who will present her new poetry book, Rumorosa Delta. Afterward, poets Félix Meza from Celaya, Paloma Guzmán from Querétaro, and María Concepción Ramírez Sámano and Jesús García Rincón (both from the Uruapan literary group “Behind the Mirror”) will read from their works about the Otomí and Purépecha cultures, social struggle, feminism, and more.

Readings will be interspersed with dances by the Angélica Fuentes Velázquez ballet company based in Celaya, from their repertory suite “Hadas.” This ballet company draws its dancers (many girls and young women) from counties all over the state of Guanajuato. The company’s dancer from San Miguel is Lucina Kathmann.

Though the poets will read in Spanish (with a few readings translated to English), this event will be enjoyable for English speakers, especially if they know some Spanish and are familiar with human rights topics. After the reading the audience is invited to a “get-to-know” with tamales
