Back by Popular Demand: I Am My Own Wife
By Jaqueline Myer
I Am My Own Wife is a profound story of survival. Not long after the fall of the Berlin Wall, playwright Doug Wright (Quills) began a conversation with Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, an elegant and eccentric 65-year-old German transvestite who, against all odds, hid from the Nazis in plain sight as a woman. To this day, Charlotte von Mahlsdorf remains a significant person in European history for reasons that surpass her ability to stand out as a transvestite. More than just her choice of dress, Charlotte’s entire lifestyle, from her sexuality and personality to her family structure, were in opposition to the ideals and expectations of the Nazi regime. Wright uses more than 30 characters—all played here by the masterful Canadian actor Alan Jordan—to piece together Charlotte’s controversial life.
