“My Kid Can Do Better Than That”: New Paintings and Drawings by Vermillion at GalerÍa Izamal
By Henry Vermillion
I know that art lovers want to hear inspirational prose about paintings; there’s nothing wrong with that. In the present case, however, the paintings in this show of my new work—which opens Saturday, November 29 at Galería Izamal downtown at Mesones 80—can be explained in fairly simple words. Sometime ago, I uncovered a packet of drawings my daughter had done when she was four, five, or six years old, and I was impressed with their directness and confidence. Young children have the fearless capacity to put down what they see as important. Many of the new oils in the show are inspired by this fearlessness.

Other new work, mostly black and white drawings, are about individual people or groups of people—for instance, cabaret dancers and music hall entertainers such as James Joyce and Samuel Beckett.
There will be new work of the other member artists as well: Steven Cary, Juan Ezcurdia, Javier García, Cat Grall, Felipe López, Dorothy Donna Parker, Britt Zaist; and jewelers: María Bracho and Mary Jo Dolle. The reception is from 6 to 8pm; the public is welcome.
