They Want to Be Alone…with You
From the SPA
By Rhea Bel-Jon Calkins
For kittens raised at the SPA or cats that come to us from multiple cat homes, the open cattery at the SPA is heaven. They are not restricted to individual cages—in fact, in their age groups they are free to roam from indoor play areas to climbing perches in fresh air and back to secluded baskets without restrictions. They do everything together—eating, playing, and sleeping. Life is good.
Unfortunately, for kittens and cats who come to us from a life alone outdoors or solo cat homes, the new experiences at the SPA with up to 49 other cats can often be a time of stress and anxiety. These cats do not put their best foot forward. They appear to hide and not to want to be near anyone at all, but that is far from the truth. They aren’t avoiding you or me; they just never learned to be around that many cats.
These loners may not want to be with cats, but they can become your best friend once they have the chance to be alone with you. Think of it—they do not need a buddy cat, they are not interested in other cats, they want only you.
May I introduce Penelope, a forever dainty tabby Siamese mix who adores laps; Princesa, a charming calico with Cleopatra eyes and a playful spirit; Rosario, left starving behind Rosewood who day by day is returning to her gorgeous Himalayan self (even after a life like that, put out your hand and she will arch her back to meet it for a pet every time); and Benito, a mellow chocolate Siamese whose blue eyes can stop traffic. Each of them loves people and is waiting for you to take them home (and away from all of those other cats).
They will receive love and care at the SPA, but being as “anti-cat” as they are, they will never thrive the way they could in your home. If you are looking for that friend who will give you unconditional love, please stop by and meet these wonderful “loners.” Adoption/volunteer hours are Monday-Saturday 11-2 at Los Pinos 7, 152 6124 (a map and lots of information about the SPA and our animals are available at www.spasanmiguel.org). You will give yourself one of the best gifts possible for your own health and happiness, and theirs too.
