Training for Tour Guides
By Paloma Robles Lacayo
The University of Guanajuato, through its headquarters in San Miguel de Allende, are offering the course Proceso de Formación Académica (Qualification Process) for getting a tour guide recognition credential. Because of the importance of tourism in San Miguel, a World Heritage Site visited by both Mexicans and foreigners, the University of Guanajuato is addressing this need for continuing education relevant to a local tourism-based vocation, which is of great social impact.
Those interested in taking the course can attend at the facilities in San Miguel, located in Beneficencia 13 crn. Indio Triste. Courses for existing guides of the city seeking to confirm or update their credentials will also be offered.
This course is the main academic requirement established by Mexican Official Standard NOM-08-TUR-2002, which defines the elements and the specialized topics that tour guides must adhere to in order for the tourism authority to issue the recognition credential. The Secretaría de Tursimo considers that a tour guide should have knowledge of the following disciplines: archeology, modern and contemporary art, pre-Columbian art, colonial art, ethnography and folk art, tourism geography, history of Mexico, general art history, human relations, group leadership, and tourism and culture legislation.
