Walking San Miguel

By Sandra Ríos

Cafe Rama is the perfect place to start your day. It is located on one of the most beautiful streets in San Miguel. Savor the green juice made of spinach, celery, pineapple, ginger, and cilantro and accompany it with chilaquiles verdes with chicken, a poached egg and hollandaise sauce. Finally, try its coffee from Chiapas or Veracruz.

When you finish, walk to Parque Juarez to enjoy its cool micro-climate or sit in some on a bench and listen to the birds’ songs and look at the great vegetation. Later, if you continue walking towards the Chorro, you will find the famous laundries where women used go to wash clothes. If you keep walking up, you’ll arrive at la Casa de la Cultura, a place built on several levels to appreciate the view of San Miguel and its flora and fauna. If you get to the top, you’ll be able to see the huge herons that inhabit trees.

Now that you are up to the top floor, take a leisurely walk down Barranca Street and stop in  at one of the oldest cantinas in San Miguel, La Sirena Gorda. Here you can savor a margarita or a tamarind ginger martini along with delicious tostadas of shrimp or fish.

Barranca 78, Centro. Tel. 415 110 0007

Later, listen some live rock and blues at Santos Crudoteca, one of bars most visited by local people. Here is one of the best bands of its kind in San Miguel.
