They’re Not Just Getting Older, They’re Getting Better!

By Megan Gabel

Puppies–those adorable little faces, cute antics–oh, so enticing! People often underestimate the effort, patience, and tolerance it takes to own puppies, not realizing that they often whimper in the night, chew everything in sight, and need consistent supervision to keep them safe. Older dogs, on the other hand, are much easier. They are less demanding, more self-sufficient, and fully-grown so there’s no surprising growth spurts. Susie, Shy, Chikis, and Precious are slightly older SPA dogs, ready to find their forever families.

About six years old, Susie is very smart, medium-sized, and stocky, with a pretty, but scarred face, and a very distinctive soprano bark. She can catch treats, high, low, to the side – she’s on it! She’s loyal, loving, and absorbs affection, happy to reciprocate with kisses and a hug (really). A climber, she needs a high, secure, walled environment. She’d be a good protector for a woman alone since she’s not that fond of male strangers, any age.

Sweet Shy hides when potential adopters stop by. Thus, it takes more effort to get to know her and win her trust. After a number of treats and walks and petting sessions, her adorable and loving personality emerges. Shy dashes around, taking little pitter-patter steps, and then runs up for some petting and sweet-talking. About 5-1/2 years old, she looks like a small, black bear, earning her the nickname of “Shy Bear.”

Chikis, a little over 4-1/2 years old, is a small/medium dog with a charming little face. She’s friendly, enthusiastic, and excited to meet people and explore the outside world. She can sit, lie down, heel, and comes next to your side and sits when told “by me.” Eager to please, she is so excited when praised for doing so.

Precious, about 4-1/2 years old, is a beautiful, medium-large dog, intelligent and loyal. She responds well to love and affection and is full of kisses for people and most other dogs. She’s also very alert and observant and will become your devoted friend. Like, Susie, she is an escape artist so a secure environment would be best.

These wonderful dogs will give years of love and devotion and, in many instances, could adjust more easily to their new lives than their younger counterparts. Learn more about them by checking out their videos at (Adopt Me! Dogs page). Meet them at the SPA, Monday-Saturday, from 11-2, 152-6124.
