Master Printer Nunik Saurent in San Miguel

By Margaret Failoni

The Santiago Corral Gallery has once again outdone itself in finding and bringing to San Miguel one of Mexico’s foremost graphic artists. With an incredible trajectory of public exhibitions throughout the world, Nunik Saurent brings to this exhibition a small selection of the many genres she masters in the art of printmaking. However, to describe her only as a printmaker would be an injustice, to say the least.

There are a group of ‘treasure’ boxes which contain folding books, woodcuts on hand-made papers especially created for her. Others are woodcut images on wood. Accompanying some of the boxes are objects: little shells, or calligraphy brushes from Japan. Each box is a precious work of art. Everything about this show embraces the viewer with the not so subtle presence of Japan, where the artist has traveled to and worked with the print masters of that country.

Saurent has collected many fine woods, which she uses for her woodcuts: mahogany, ceiba, cedar and pine are but some of those used. She first lightly draws onto the surface of the wood and then, using special instruments, cuts into the surfaces to create the desired design. At times, she will print onto different paper surfaces, some painted and some left natural. Some of the work is collaged, as are the ethereal kites, which float through the air. Others are enriched with lithography.

The exhibition also presents some of her pots and vases, hand-painted Talavera of Uriarte. There is great ‘sophistication’ in the best sense of the word and an exquisitely refined taste in everything this artist creates. Her work can be found in some of the best public and private collections, especially in Europe and Asia where she is greatly admired and collected.
