Storytelling Festival Tickets Selling Fast

By Cheri Wright

Last summer five volunteers met in San Miguel and held their first Skype call with Stephanie Medlock, a member of Indigan Storyteller. Medlock had earlier suggested to Susan Page, director of the San Miguel Literary Sala, that the Sala and Indigan Storyteller might want to co-produce a storytelling festival in San Miguel. Light bulbs went off. Hands went up. Page recruited the five volunteers, and that’s how this story began.

As director of the first annual San Miguel International Storytelling Festival, I am honored to talk about what’s going to happen over a few days in our multi-talented, creative town in mid-October.

Workshop Performance, Tuesday, October 14, 5pm (150 pesos)

Twenty budding storytellers will participate in an all-day storytelling workshop by Indigan Storyteller. A select number of workshop graduates will perform their own story in front of a live audience—in many cases performing for the first time in public. The top two performers from the workshop will earn coveted spots in the festival’s two-day competition. This is a one-time event and seating is limited.

Two-Day Competition, October 17 and 18, 10am-3pm (150 pesos each day)

Twenty-eight local and national storytellers will compete for cash prizes, with 14 storytellers performing each day. They’ll each tell a true story in less than 10 minutes. Cash prizes of US$500 and US$250 will be awarded to the two overall winners as selected by a jury of storytelling judges.

That’s not all. As a member of the audience, you’ll get to vote, too. You’ll help us pick the Most Dramatic, Most Humorous, and Best Story winners for Friday and Saturday.

Join us and help cheer on your favorite storytellers from a lineup that includes Béa Aaronson, Beldon Butterfield, Carlos F. Chancellor, Carol Merchasin, Carrie Haugh, Cynthia Huntington, David Fink, David Garza, Diane Varney, Drae Campbell, Emmett Miller, Ethan Feldman, Frank Gaydos, Helenmarie Corcoran, Judi Hollis, Judith Jenya, Kirsten Dehner, Mark Johaningsmeir, Martha Donnelly, Mary Dean Cason, Mike Shafran, Nathan Feuerberg, Paul Pasulka, Rick Roberts, Roger Batton, Sherilyn Mentes, Stephanie Medlock, Stephen Goodfellow, Twanna Hines and more!

The Festival Competition ticket price, at only 150 pesos per day, translates into about 10 pesos a story. What a deal!

Tickets now on sale. All events will be held at the Teatro Santa Ana in La Biblioteca. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased only at the Santa Ana box office. Reserved seating is limited and the events will sell out, so buy your tickets early. You don’t want to be the one telling a story about how you didn’t get a ticket to the eagerly anticipated first annual San Miguel International Storytelling Festival. Now that would be a story with a bad ending.
