Perhaps, if you take this tour, this year’s Day of the Dead may have a different meaning as the tour highlights buildings in the downtown area, many of which have been standing for 400 years as generation after generation lived and died in their confines. The homes aren’t uniformly alike; indeed the origin of the four different styles can be directed back to Europe and the influence of the kings who ruled there. The thousands who have died in San Miguel de Allende in those houses are the ones whose souls return on the Day of the Dead to where they were buried all those years ago up to the present day.

The tour lasts about two-and-a-half hours; it’s mostly level walking. All of the 200-peso donations for this tour go to Patronato Pro Niños, the organization that provides free medical and dental care to the needy children of San Miguel and the some 400 villages and ranchos which surround the city.
