20th International Jazz and Blues Festival

By María Dolores Vidargas Rojas

We are pleased to present the twentieth annual International Jazz & Blues Festival in San Miguel de Allende, which will be held from November 12 to 16, 2014. It is considered one of the most important festivals in its genre in Mexico, and one of the largest in Latin America.

On this occasion, great musicians, some winners and Grammy nominees, such as Tuck & Patti, an extraordinary duet that interpret jazz, R & B, gospel, masterfully using only guitar and voice. The extraordinary quartet comprised of Peter Bernstein (guitar), Eric Alexander (saxophone), Joe Farnsworth (drums) and John Webber (bass), is one of the strongest groups in the current New York scene. Each of these musicians has extensive experience and international recognition. The Brice Winston Group, including Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and prominent music educator Winston and trumpeter Terence Blanchard will be at the opening of the Festival. A revelation in the world of Blues, King Solomon Hicks, a 19-year-old guitarist and singer from New York City, has done recordings with the Cotton Club All Stars Band. The Festival will close with the San Miguel Jazz Cats, directed by bassist Antonio Lozoya. Their program includes a tribute to Ray Charles, The Beatles, Great Exponents of Blues, Motown, Sting, and Paul Simon. Special guests will participate.

Besides the concerts, many free activities, not only auditory but also visual, will enrich the Festival. An exhibition by artist Samuel Hernandez—who has created the image of the Festival for the past 6 year—and two young local painters; a film series of jazz and blues, and the presentation of some books by one of the most important chroniclers of Mexican jazz, writer and journalist Antonio Malacara. In the educational field, the traditional Jazz Workshop, aimed at all age groups, which will address the elements of this musical language.

The International Festival of Jazz and Blues in San Miguel de Allende will include activities at no cost and concerts at affordable prices for every pocket. For information, see the website: http//www.sanmigueljazz.com.mx/festival.html.
