Pro Musica Concert Season Begins
By Michael Pearl
Pro Musica announces its next season, running from October, 2014, through March, 2015, with a cornucopia of musical events to suit every taste. From opera and the symphony, to violin and piano recitals, to classical guitar and string quartets, there is classical music here for everyone, with some 25 events over nearly a six-month season. One of the highlights of the season will be our production of Verdi’s opera, La Traviata, a feast of glorious singing and dramatic staging, starring tenor Rodrigo Garciarroyo and soprano Enivia Mendoza, both of whom brought the house down in Il Trovatore last February.
The list of marvelous artists goes on and on, and you can look for your favorite returning artists, and exciting new talent. To mention but a few, Elizabeth Pitcairn, who has wowed audiences for several seasons with her Stradivarius “The Red Violin”; all time favorite Richard Dowling, opening the season on Saturday October 11, with the World’s Greatest Classical Piano Hits and, in 2015, playing an all Scott Joplin program; and the fabulous Afiara String Quartet. New artists include the D’Amore Duo with American classical guitarist William Feazley, partnering oboist Jeonjee Sohn, in a first-ever combination of these instruments for Pro Musica. The Copland House Piano Trio, the resident ensemble from the great composer’s Historic Monument home, debuts for us in February, as does the Amernet String Quartet.
Both our venues; St. Paul’s Church, and the larger Teatro Ángela Peralta, are both intimate, but in different ways. The church has a unique, almost perfect acoustic for chamber music, and a marvelous energy builds between audience and players. The larger scale events at the theater have a great sense of occasion.
Tickets for all our concerts are available at our usual ticket sales outlets two to three weeks before every concert. These are: La Tienda in La Biblioteca, Insurgentes 25; Solutions, Mesones 57; La Conexión, Aldama 3; and at the door half an hour before each concert begins.
None of this would be possible without the support of our Patron Members, our Pro Musica family, whose membership subscriptions make it possible for us to bring world class artists to San Miguel. In return we provide an outstanding range of benefits and an unrivalled social program of Meet the Artists dinners and cocktail parties, where artists and patron members mix after concerts. Our artists also stay in our Patrons’ homes, further strengthening the bond between hosts, guests and audiences.
Becoming a Patron Member also funds our education outreach program, Rhythm, Rhyme & Reason, teaching music to 800 children in five primary schools for 44 weeks a year. Your subscription, from as little as US$100 per year, will help to support a cultural life of unique breadth and quality in San Miguel, and contribute to the well-being of some of the most underprivileged members of the community.
Pro Musica is a largely voluntary organization and we warmly welcome offers of help in areas such as bookkeeping, website maintenance, writing articles, ushering and event organization. For details of Patron Membership contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit our website at www.promusicasma.com.
