US$ Donations to the SPA – Still Possible?

By Megan Gabel

When we first heard about the problem expatriates were having with cashing US checks, we thought that this issue was unrelated to the SPA. After all, we’re a Mexican nonprofit organization so how could the US tax regulation impact us? Surprise, surprise! It impacts us a lot!

As it turns out, we are unable to deposit US checks made out to the SPA in our bank account or cash them through an exchange. There’s nothing we can do with them. To further complicate things, many expatriates donate to us through San Miguel Community Foundation (either by check or the SMCF PayPal account) so they can get a US tax deduction. San Miguel Community Foundation pays us monthly for those donations via – you guessed it – a US check that we will not be able to deposit or cash. Because of this dilemma, starting this month, SMCF will wire transfer funds to us monthly, but its bank charges a wire transfer fee.

Never fear—we have come up with a solution of sorts. Although we cannot accept US checks, we can accept US cash in our office, Los Pinos 7 (152-5124). US currency donations to the SPA directly may still be made through our website via PayPal: because we can transfer money from PayPal directly to our Mexican bank. For a US tax-deductible donation, checks should be made payable to San Miguel Community Foundation (memo line: “SPA”) and either given to us in our office or mailed to SPA, Los Pinos 7, Col. Lindavista, San Miguel de Allende, GTO 37736 Mexico or to our US address at SPA, PMB No. 18, 220 N. Zapata Hwy. No. 11, Laredo, Texas 78043-4464 USA. We will hold on to those checks and turn them in when we accumulate enough to make the wire transfer fee more practical.

We wish we had a better way to address this problem, but that is all we’ve come up with so far. Please don’t let these obstacles and inconveniences discourage you from making donations to the SPA. Kittens like Corinne and Cocoa and puppies like Sara and Luna, along with all our cats and dogs waiting to be adopted (a total of about 100), depend upon your support to survive.
