San Miguel Theater Company on Course to Open!

By Mary Norquist

When are you going to open? Where is the theater located? When will we be able to see the theater? What’s it going to look like? These are all questions that San Miguel Theater Company wants to answer for all of you who are curious.

Every Friday 12-3pm
Independencia 82

We’ve leased a building at Independencia 82, and we are well underway in converting it to a comfortable and lovely theater space for all of the community of San Miguel. The theater is home to The San Miguel Theater Company, which will be producing a season of four shows each year.

Our first show of the 2014-15 season is Midnight and Magnolias by Ron Hutchinson. Legendary Hollywood producer David O. Selznick has a problem. He has just fired the director of Gone With the Wind and the script is on its umpteenth version. He desperately needs a new director and writer—immediately. However, the writer he wants, Ben Hecht, has never read the novel. Selznick gives him a brief synopsis of the story and offers him $15,000 to write a revised screenplay by the end of the week. What ensues is the hysterical story of the writing of Gone With the Wind. Tickets will go on sale soon for this late October show, so watch for more information on this and the rest of the season.

We’ve formed an A.C., or nonprofit organization, and, in addition to presenting plays, we will be creating free classes for kids in local public schools in theater, music, and dance. The space will also serve as a gallery for local artists. Work will be rotated quarterly.

Additionally, the theater may be used by other theater or entertainment groups who want a professional theater environment in which to work. We offer a large backstage area, ample dressing room space, flexible stage size, professional lighting and sound systems, and 115 comfortable seats. There will also be a bistro area for use before, during and after the shows. Our “Taxi Concierge” will insure that if you need a taxi home, one will be waiting for you at the door. If you drive to the theater, we have ample parking with an on-site security guard.

Our progress so far includes:

•Professional architectural plans for the design of the theater

•Delivery of theater seats from the US

•Building risers for the theater seating begun

•Building theater stage begun

•Purchase of professional light board and instruments

•Plans for purchase of material and construction of theater curtains

•Launch of our new Facebook page: San Miguel Theater Company—check it out!

As you can see, we’ve been busy. We’re creating work for San Miguel residents and making as many of the purchases here as possible.

Your support and involvement is crucial to the success of the San Miguel Theater Company. We hope you will attend performances, get involved in a committee, volunteer your time and talents, and make a monetary donation in any amount that you choose.

We invite you to come by to check out the progress and see how your donations are being used. There will be a board member there every Friday from noon to 3pm to show you around and answer any questions.
