San Miguel Fall Dressage Show
By Rachel Stratford
Top local and national riders will be gathering September 20 and 21 to compete in Otomí Centro Hípico’s Fall Dressage Show. The sport of dressage is the perfect combination of equestrian athletics and the art of classical horsemanship. Riders and their equine partners perform patterns referred to as “tests”, which increase in degrees of difficulty as higher levels of training are achieved. The Fall Dressage Show will feature a vendor’s marketplace and two special exhibitions, “Pegasso Lusitano” and “A Spectator’s Guide to Dressage.”

“Pegasso Lusitano” is a spectacular liberty freestyle presentation by Martha Fernanda del Valle. Martha, known throughout the equestrian community as MaFer, began riding at the age of five and has achieved recognition as a top competitor, winning many national and international titles and rides as a member of the military. To create the show “Pegasso Lusitano”, MaFer trained her pure Lusitano horse Marfim to accept the costuming needed to become a living Pegasus, and then to allow her to ride him bareback and to guide him without use of her hands. The result, set to music, is an example of the perfect harmony and partnership that can be achieved between horse and rider. MaFer will perform both Saturday and Sunday at 11am and 4pm. This is a show not to be missed!
Dressage requires the horse and rider to combine the strength and agility of gymnastics with the elegance and beauty of ballet. The result is truly the best blend of sport and art. Like any sport, watching dressage is far more interesting the more you know about it. “A Spectator’s Guide to Dressage” will be a live demonstration of the traditional skills performed in dressage tests. Following this educational presentation, spectators will have a better understanding of what each horse and rider competing in the show are attempting to achieve.
Admission to the Dressage Show is free. In addition to watching horses and riders compete and enjoying the special exhibitions, there will be plenty of opportunity to enjoy the beautiful grounds of Otomí, browse the vendor’s marketplace and enjoy lunch at B’ui. Events are scheduled between 9am and 5pm daily. For more information please contact email@example.com.
