Casita Linda Builds 77th House
By Louise Gilliam
Casita Linda, a nonprofit organization that builds homes for those living in extreme poverty in San Miguel de Allende, has just completed house number 77 (for a single woman with two children living in Nuevo Pantoja). Guadalupe works in a brick factory, 12 hours a day, five days a week to provide for her family. She must make 600 bricks a day to receive her weekly paycheck of 600 pesos. Guadalupe and her children, Sandra and Brian, were sleeping on a dirt floor in a shack made of discarded metal sheets. Casita Linda was made aware of their circumstances and, after vetting the family to be sure the children were in school and there was no abuse or alcoholism in the home, they were selected based upon need to receive a home. We supply eco stoves and solar lighting to all the homes we build. We supply beds and bedding and distribute clothes to the families in need. They now have warm shelter, dignity and hope for the future. Casita Linda is in the process of building house number 78 for another impoverished family in Nuevo Pantoja.
Many changes have occurred at Casita Linda over the past few months. We have added new board members, have appointed Amber Nieto as our executive director, and have reduced labor and administrative costs substantially. We have become active in social media and have implemented several special projects. We have implemented an Ambassador program, which allows individuals and businesses to donate an entire house to a specific family and follow the progress of the home and family from start to finish. A plaque with the name of the donor or business is placed on the family home upon completion.
Our third annual Spirit of Hope Gala, Arabian Nights, will be held on October 11 at Otomi with a fabulous dinner presented by b’ui, the gorgeous restaurant on the Otomi grounds. Champagne and hors d’oeuvres during the cocktail hour will be followed by a three-course dinner. Wine and an open bar will be available during the entire evening. J.K. O’Donnell and the ZuZu Men will entertain you with dinner and dance music. A luxury trip to Morocco, including two business class tickets, will be auctioned off at the event. This event is always sold out. Tickets are US$135 or the peso equivalent and will be available at La Conexión on Aldama starting Friday, September 5.
