Get to Know San Miguel and Its Surroundings

By Sandra Ríos

To prepare for a day of exploration, begin with breakfast at  Café Santa Ana, in an outdoor location and surrounded by art. Appealing breakfast packages include coffee, fruit or juice, rosemary potatoes and refried beans, bread, butter and jam or tortillas and salsa, and egg dishes. We suggest huevos rancheros, or for something sweet, order the blueberry hot cakes.

After a full breakfast, we are ready to visit the archaeological site Cañada de la Virgen to visit its pyramids. This area was once an important social center linked with the political system of the Toltecs. Its axis of symmetry is directed to the rising and setting of the sun and moon; and its design indicates cosmic cycles governing farming, hunting, and gathering.

30 km southwest of San Miguel de Allende.

Information: Plaza Principal 8, Centro. Tel: 152 9600

Adults 30 pesos, 10 pesos children

10 am-6 pm (closed Monday)

On your return we suggest heading for La Azotea, a place close to the Parroquia with a great view, to enjoy a beautiful sunset with a cocktail, delicious jicama tacos and breaded shrimp for dinner. Listen to excellent music here, too.

Umarán 6, Centro. Tel. 152 8265
